Orthotics or Orthoses are an in-shoe device that supports or influences the foot in order to alter foot function. With so many different styles of orthoses it can be very difficult for the general public to know what their specific needs are when deciding on an orthotic.

Firstly we Diagnose your condition. This may involve a combination of clinical tests or examinations, gait analysis, pressure analysis, X-rays, ultrasounds, MRI’s, CT scans or bone scans. By correctly diagnosing your problem we are half way to getting you back on your feet.

We then assess your biomechanics and gait. This process takes into account such factors as weight, activity, foot type, flexibility, occupation, lifestyle and age. This allows us to customize the therapy specifically to your needs. No two feet are ever exactly the same so this assessment process is critical in determining the style and type of orthotic specific for your needs.

Custom Molded Orthotics:

Similar to spectacles, the prescription process in orthotic therapy is crucial. Whilst two devices may look exactly the same the function of the device may differ considerably. The podiatrists in depth knowledge of how the foot functions and how this function may affect the rest of the musculoskeletal system allows the practitioner to specifically prescribe an orthotic to optimize your foot posture and enhance your lower limb function.

At Lord street Podiatry, we use the Podiatech 'Printlab' machine to ensure a 'custom-made' orthotic, specifically to your requirements, making an extremely accurate insole.

This process may also include other treatment modalities such as stretching, strengthening, proprioceptive retraining, footwear advice, activity modification and more if the practitioner finds underlying weakness or compensations in your lower limb assessment.

The next process involves fitting you with your orthoses. This process requires the practitioner to review your gait with the orthotic and with a range of your everyday footwear. Adjustments may be made to fully optimize your foot function.

The review process allows us to make sure you are getting better. Generally if you are encountering continued problems or are slow to respond to our treatment we will modify your treatment program to suit. Some of our orthotics come with a money back guarantee, so if for some reason you are unhappy with the devices at this review we will refund you the cost of your device*

Prefabricated Orthotics:

We have a wide range of pre-made orthotics available for selection off-the-shelf. Our pre-fabricated orthotics are sourced from the orthotic brands Sidas, Medi and Woly. These off-the-shelf orthosis come in all different types and shapes for differential needs, providing a simple orthotics for everyone. Our qualified podiatrists will assess your foot function and choose the most supportive prefabricated orthosis for your podiatry needs.

Diabetic Care:

Diabetes is a national health concern with the disease affecting Australians in epidemic proportions.

Type II Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease with 215 Australians being diagnosed with the disease daily. By the end of 2010 Diabetes Australia expects the total number of Australians affected by diabetes to exceed 1.8 Million and over 3000 Australians will undergo amputations as a result of their disease.

Diabetes Australia recommends at least 1 review annually by a qualified podiatrist to assess your foot health status.

Our practitioners will be able to highlight any risks you may be predisposed to and which in many cases you may be unaware of. Our Neurological and Vascular Assessments utilize Doppler ultrasound blood flow technology along with other diagnostic tests to determine the health of your lower limb blood flow and nerve supply.

Information about your foot health and diabetic risk category is then shared with your general practitioner or diabetic specialist for a collaborative health care approach. Your podiatrist will also recommend specific individualized management strategies in the attempt to minimize your risk of lower limb diabetic complications.

Each Diabetes appointment is a comprehensive 60 minute appointment at a cost of $80.00 / $75.00 (pensioner rate) which can be rebatable by Medicare via an APC/AHMR referral.

Diabetes Assessments:

Diabetes Assessments are a comprehensive health assessment to ensure your podiatry health assists optimum diabetic lifestyle. Diabetes Assessments are recommended to be performed each year to ensure your podiatry health is of optimal condition in relation to your diabetes. Assessments such as Dopplers, temperature, responses, blood flow and more. These thorough reports are forwarded to your GP for their ongoing records.

Diabetes Education:

Performed by Matilda Johnston, a qualified Diabetes Educator. Diabetes Education appointments are hour-long informative sessions where you learn how to manage your diabetes lifestyle with confidence.

Children’s feet are complex structures. They differ from adults feet as the immature bone structure results in the child’s foot being highly flexible and soft. This often results in children having a flat foot during the early stages of walking. However, the immature foot undergoes various stages of development as the child grows. There may be cause for concern if your child remains flat-footed.

You should contact us if

  • Your child complains of tired or sore legs and/or feet
  • You or a family member notice something “different” in the way your child walks
  • Your child isn’t walking at 18 months
  • Your child trips over or falls a lot compared to children of the same age

Never dismiss your child’s consistent complaints as “growing pains.”

They may be signs of abnormal foot and leg problems. In most cases the earlier a child’s problem is diagnosed and treated the easier and more successful the treatment will be.

Mobilization and Biomechanical Assessments:

The biomechanics and mobility of your feet is essential to living your every day life.

Mobilization is a treatment that improves the balance and movement of your feet, reducing any pain or discomfort. Symptoms can include low range of motion (including from arthritis), joint pain (including ankles), stiffness, inflammatory and noninflammatory pain (can be caused from previous injuries).

Biomechanical Assessments observe the lower limbs and their structure, strength, weaknesses and alignment. Pain or discomfort can be experienced in the muscles, tendons and fascia from both either internal or external forces such as joint movement, footwear, injury, ect. Common symptoms include heel pain, Achilles pain, knee pain, forefoot pain, shin splints, back pain, planter fasciitis and leg length difference. Biomechanical Assessments allows your podiatrist to guide you through a management plan to control and improve the biomechanics of your feet through the use of orthotics, soft tissue therapy, exercise plans, trigger point dry needling or joint mobilization depending on your case.

Paraffin Wax Bath and Touch Therapy Massage:

These pamper-like treatments are performed by our popular Podiatry Assistant Diane from Monday to Thursday.

Paraffin Wax Baths promote the circulation of blood flow in your feet, encouraging optimum podiatry health. Diane dips your feet into a soothing warm scented wax, wraps your feet in therapy socks and allows it to sit for 15-20 minutes whilst you sit back and relax. Diane then peels off the wax, leaving your feet feeling refreshed and smooth. For the ultimate treatment, opt for a massage to finish off your pamper session.

Touch Therapy Massages is highly recommended to anyone as it is a relaxing treatment that releases the muscular tension in your feet, and connecting to other stressed parts of your body. Diane is known as the miracle worker with her massages, having a strong passion in all-round health and podiatry nerve endings. Massages with Diane can be booked in either as one appointment, or combined with a wax bath.

Heel Pain:

Heel pain is the most common musculoskeletal condition that podiatrists treat. It is estimated that approximately 10 per cent of the population will suffer heel pain at some point in their lifetime.

Heel pain is a generic term used to describe a number of conditions that affect the heel. These conditions include Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs and severs disease. The most common condition being plantar fasciitis.

The plantar fascia is a strong band of connective tissue that runs from the sole of the heel to the ball of the foot. Its role in the foot structure is to provide structural integrity and strength to the arch of the foot. Overuse of this ligament can result in micro tearing of the ligament and chronic inflammation which leads to pain. In severe or chronic cases this may be associated with a heel spur. Pain is usually felt during the first steps after rest or upon rising. It may also be associated with long periods of weight bearing or changes in activity. If left untreated this condition can lead to tearing or potential rupture of the plantar fascia requiring surgery and months long rehabilitation.

Ingrown Toenail Surgery:

Ingrown toenails is a very common cause of toe discomfort and can be permanently controlled through a thorough procedure of Ingrown Toenail Surgery. Our podiatrists have undergone specific training in the surgical correction of painful ingrown toenails.

The process is usually initiated with an appointment to assess the ingrown toenail, then booking of an hour long appointment to perform the surgery, followed by a redress-review appointment. The surgery and redress-review appointments are a cost of $250.00 which can be reimbursed through an EPC/AHMR GP referral. Treatment is performed in-chair in-clinic with a simple walk-in walk-out treatment.

Lord Street Podiatry has provided relief to many ingrown-nail affected patients, and continues to provide satisfaction to all clients of any discomfort. For any questions, we can provide a handout to allay any of your concerns or questions regarding nail surgery.

Lower-Limb Dry Needling:

Lower-Limb Dry Needling is a popular treatment for our clients with muscular tension, pain and discomfort. Tight muscles in your lower legs (commonly calf muscles) and feet are released by inserting a very fine, sterile needle into the troubled trigger point. Dry Needling disrupts and breaks the physiological pain cycle caused by trigger points, releasing and relaxing the shortened muscle fibers back to their resting state. Trigger points are tense, hyperirritable muscle fibers that can inhibit the quality of simple every day muscle movements such as pointing of the foot or placing foot flat on the ground.

This system allows for us certified providers to remodel individual's damaged nails affected by fungus, defects and trauma caused to the nail. The KeryFlex composite resin creates a flexible and durable non-porous nail that allows the remaining nail to grow. The KeryFlex nail resin isn't affected by acetone, nail polished or detergents. KeryFlex Nail Restoration is an immediate cosmetic improvement providing a natural-looking nail.
